The Digital Crackdown: 40+ Erotic & Bold OTT Platforms Banned in India (2026)

Introduction

The Indian streaming landscape has undergone its most significant regulatory overhaul to date. As of February 2026, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has effectively dismantled the "bold content" ecosystem that surged between 2020 and 2025. Invoking Section 69A of the IT Act and the IT Rules 2021, the government has blocked access to over 40 platforms found guilty of hosting "obscene, vulgar, and indecent" material. While some platforms have attempted to pivot to mainstream drama, the majority now face permanent ISP-level blocks and removal from app stores.

The Master List of Banned & Restricted Platforms

This list includes platforms banned across the major government waves of March 2024, July 2025, and early 2026.

The Survivors & Current Legal Status

While the "erotic-first" model has been largely suppressed, a few platforms have adapted to survive under the current Self-Regulatory framework:

  • Atrangii: Active. By maintaining a hybrid model (Live TV + OTT) and focusing on a broader range of genres (K-Dramas, Action, and Mythology), Atrangii has remained active. It keeps its bolder "Premium" content within strict age-gated sections to comply with DPCGC guidelines.
  • Cineprime: Still functional but under heavy government surveillance; it has significantly toned down its visual explicitness to avoid a permanent ban.
  • EORTV: Continues to operate by focusing on "relationship-driven" bold content and LGBTQ+ stories, which are viewed through a different regulatory lens than pure erotica.
